[12:31] <@Calum> good evening (afternoon)
[12:31] <@jacky> Good afternoon (evening)
[12:31] <@jacky> :)
[12:31] <@jacky> what's new?
[12:31] <@Calum> not much really, another crazy project taking shape in my head but nothing real heh. Yourself?
[12:31] <@jacky> that's better than having a crazy shaped head
[12:31] <@jacky> not much
[12:32] <@jacky> was just outside... got too hot... came in
[12:32] <@Calum> hah
[12:32] <@jacky> hehehe
[12:32] <@Calum> heh, good for you
[12:32] <@jacky> so... what's the project?
[12:32] <@Calum> another new build hah
[12:32] <@Calum> nothing too exciting
[12:32] <@jacky> hey.... if you've got the $$, go for it
[12:32] <@jacky> heh
[12:32] <@Calum> true, true
[12:33] <@jacky> heck, with your job.... and you should take advantage of this.... I bet you could almost build one, use it a while, and sell it for what you've got in it... in other words, always have a new machine, for free
[12:34] <@Calum> I can get a lot of parts at very heavily discounted prices
[12:34] <@Calum> used stock, returns, etc
[12:34] <@jacky> see?
[12:34] <@jacky> oh... this is interesting
[12:34] <@jacky> some years ago
[12:34] <@jacky> and I don't think this has changed
[12:34] <@jacky> I was told that the computer parts business, operates on a very thin margin
[12:34] <@jacky> very little markup
[12:35] <@jacky> so... if you can get parts cheap, are they taking a loss?
[12:35] <@Calum> new parts - very little markup, you're right, at least as far as I am aware
[12:36] <@Calum> used parts, different situation
[12:36] <@Calum> for example, courier claims, if an item is damaged - company gets compensated so they would make all profit, whatever they sold it for
[12:36] <@Calum> selling it to a member of staff for ?20 = ?20 profit, giving it away is still not a loss
[12:37] <@jacky> not understanding... sorry
[12:37] <@jacky> what is courier claims?
[12:37] <@Calum> if an item is damaged in transit, by the courier
[12:37] <@jacky> that's what it sounded like
[12:37] <@jacky> but
[12:37] <@jacky> if it is damaged, it is damaged
[12:37] <@jacky> what good is it?
[12:37] <@jacky> just junk
[12:37] <@Calum> well...if the damage is a scratch on the side panel....I wouldn't care
[12:38] <@jacky> ohhhhh!
[12:38] <@jacky> ok
[12:38] <@jacky> I'm thinking like... it got run over by the truck
[12:38] <@jacky> heheeh
[12:38] <@Calum> heh, not quite that bad, I knowwe do get some that are like that but I was meaning items with less damage
[12:39] <@jacky> scratched, but 100% functional, eh?
[12:39] <@Calum> or, used items that are refunded, that we can't use again
[12:39] <@Calum> yep
[12:39] <@jacky> interesting that they'd would refund something that they cannot use
[12:39] <@jacky> what situation would cause that?
[12:40] <@Calum> trying to think of a recent example....
[12:40] <@Calum> ah
[12:40] <@Calum> a bundle that was unstable overclocked, we had it back twice but it wouldn';t stay stable for the customer. Last time it came back to us, it was for a refund
[12:40] <@Calum> we no longer use that motherboard in any systems or bundles, so we can't use it for that
[12:40] <@Calum> we can't sell it as new
[12:41] <@Calum> make sense?
[12:41] <@jacky> sort off... let me ask:
[12:42] <@jacky> your company warrants overclocked systems, because that is the very nature of your company?
[12:42] <@Calum> yes, it's a large part of our systems/bundles range
[12:42] <@jacky> and: hehehe is that the reason you no longer use that mb ? heheheehe
[12:43] <@Calum> no, we just started to use the updated version of that MB, not because the old one didn;t do the overclock reliably
[12:43] <@Calum> just because we have to keep up with the market, competition etc
[12:43] <@jacky> still though... that eating a lot of money.... I'd expect them to build that "used" mb into a non-overclocked machine, and sell it... to recuperate as much as possible
[12:44] <@jacky> couldn't they get more for it that way, than selling it to you for a pittance?
[12:44] <@Calum> we would do, if we used that MB in any systems
[12:44] <@jacky> why is using the mb in any systems a qualifying factor?
[12:44] <@Calum> if it was a matter of that particular board not doing the overclock, that's what we would do, same as for chips, RAM, etc
[12:45] <@Calum> because different systems use different boards. if it's advertised as one board and the customer recieves another, it's false advertising
[12:45] <@jacky> I wasn't clear then
[12:45] <@jacky> sell it, saying exactly what it is
[12:45] <@jacky> not as something else
[12:45] <@Calum> you mean as a one-off machine, something like that?
[12:46] <@jacky> I think I understand the term "one-off", and Yes.. exactly.
[12:46] <@jacky> In other words, I'm thinking like this:
[12:46] <@Calum> I don't know why they wouldn;t do that, there must be some reason as we did used to sell one-off systems
[12:46] <@jacky> it has $500 worth of stuff in it
[12:46] <@jacky> they can sell it to employees for $200
[12:46] <@jacky> or.. put it all together, and sell a one time machine, for $350
[12:46] <@jacky> and lose less
[12:47] <@Calum> or, what we currently do is sell it, as b-grade, for say $400
[12:47] <@jacky> what is b-grade ?
[12:47] <@Calum> used or returned parts, can be missing boxes, accessories, things like that
[12:48] <@jacky> that sounds exactly like what I'm suggesting
[12:48] <@Calum> yes, we just sell them as parts though not in a prebuilt machine
[12:48] <@jacky> whichever way would return the most $$.... :)
[12:49] <@Calum> heh
[12:49] <@jacky> well... now we've talked so much...
[12:49] <@jacky> did you explain to me about your new build idea?
[12:49] <@jacky> I've forgotten...
[12:49] <@Calum> nope, I didn't, heh
[12:50] <@jacky> I'm listening....
[12:50] <@jacky> heh
[12:50] <@Calum> basically I'm wanting to upgrade again...going watercooled as well :)
[12:51] <@jacky> ?!!??
[12:51] <@jacky> I thought that was ... for hassle vs. cooling... just not worth it
[12:51] <@Calum> depends really....
[12:51] <@jacky> and, what's the risk of springing a leak?
[12:51] <@Calum> hassle, not so much, because I have a lot of experienced people to help me
[12:51] <@jacky> ah.. true
[12:52] <@jacky> at work, right?
[12:52] <@Calum> risk of leaking...luck of the draw, but that's why we'll test it first
[12:52] <@Calum> yep
[12:52] <@Calum> everyone in the tech department is watercooled to some extent
[12:52] <@jacky> I was thinking not so muc hof a leak initially, but as time goes by
[12:52] <@Calum> not too much of a risk there, as long as everything is secured properly in the first place
[12:52] <@jacky> why do they do it? are they oc'ing *that* far? or just to be cool (no pun intended)
[12:53] <@Calum> both, and because it looks good, and to keep noise down
[12:53] <@Calum> most are past the limit of the highest end air cooling
[12:53] <@jacky> just curious... how is the water cooled? I mean... I understand the principle of heat exchange... but in this case, I just wonder how it is actually done. Something like a little car radiator, with a fan blowing through it?
[12:54] <@jacky> looks good? you can see it?
[12:54] <@Calum> radiator(s), yes
[12:54] <@Calum> and yes...side panel windows
[12:55] <@jacky> what's next then? instead of a fan/radiotor arangement, a little compressor and actual refridgeration?
[12:55] <@jacky> :)
[12:55] <@Calum> that's too much really...water cooling can be nice and easy
[12:55] <@Calum> anything higher than water cooling is mostly just for benchmarking etc, not a long term solution
[12:56] <@Calum> higher = better, sorry
[12:56] <@jacky> I assume that the water pump is external, and does not load on the computer psu
[12:56] <@jacky> how big is the little radiator? like 4 inches square?
[12:56] <@Calum> it can be mounted externally but it's often internal, running off the PSU as far as I am aware
[12:57] <@Calum> depends how big you want the rad to be
[12:57] <@jacky> I guess.. if you get hotter and hotter, you just get a bigger radiator! heheeh
[12:57] <@Calum> pretty much, or better flow, or higher speed fans
[12:57] <@jacky> how about the fan on the radiator? is it powered externally?
[12:57] <@Calum> standard case fans
[12:57] <@jacky> oh? they move enough air?
[12:57] <@jacky> interesting
[12:58] <@jacky> then.. isn't the noise the same?
[12:59] <@Calum> it depends, really. If you're using a small radiator, then yes it could be., But use a larger radiator with, say, two low speed fans, and it's nice and quiet, whereas to get the same cooling with air you'd need an immense heatsink with two high rpm fans
[12:59] <@jacky> makes perfect sense
[13:00] <@jacky> get in touch with your uncle (was it an uncle.. .the car mechanic?).... and get a used car radiator... that'll hold you
[13:00] <@jacky> hehehee
[13:00] <@jacky> hey! pipe it outdoors... and for half the year, you probably won't need any fans on it at all!
[13:00] <@Calum> heh, yeah, car radiators are used quite a bit by extreme water cooling anthusiasts
[13:01] <@Calum> 8enthusiasts
[13:01] <@Calum> *
[13:01] <@Calum> argh can't type hah
[13:01] <@jacky> I was joking... !
[13:01] <@jacky> they need something with that kind of cooling capacity??
[13:01] <@Calum> and yes, I've seen that done too, basically piping the heat into the ground
[13:01] <@Calum> they don't NEED it, but....it's something fun :)
[13:01] <@jacky> thought so
[13:01] <@Calum> I could think of ways to "need" it though
[13:02] <@jacky> with a little old cpu??
[13:02] <@jacky> wow...
[13:02] <@jacky> that's a lot of cooling capacity
[13:02] <@Calum> you can cool more than the CPU
[13:02] <@Calum> but
[13:02] <@Calum> what about cooling, say, several machines in the same loop, using just the one rad?
[13:02] <@jacky> ah
[13:02] <@jacky> good point
[13:03] <@jacky> oh.. earlier you mentioned better flow, to increase capacity
[13:03] <@jacky> that hits a point of diminishing returns
[13:03] <@jacky> or.. with car motors, it can
[13:03] <@Calum> yes, as does adding more radiator space, or higher speed fans
[13:03] <@Calum> it's a question of balancing flow, vs radiator size, vs fans
[13:03] <@jacky> way back when.... if we didn't have the money, and the thermostat went bad, we'd just take it out
[13:03] <@jacky> newer cars... you can't do that
[13:03] <@jacky> water moves too fast, and in the summer, won't cool
[13:04] <@jacky> comes back, still hot
[13:04] <@Calum> yep, increasing the flow rate isn't always helpful
[13:04] <@jacky> not sure if I'm explaining it well
[13:04] <@jacky> there is a "right" flow rate, though
[13:04] <Mulreay> hence a fan on a radiator
[13:05] <@Calum> no, I understand what you're saying. You need to balance the water flow against the radiator size, against the fans
[13:05] <Mulreay> + surface area
[13:05] <@jacky> Mulreay: Hello. actually, on a car, the fan does nothing, once you are up to much speed at all
[13:05] <@Calum> increasing one doesn't necessarily help the temps
[13:05] <@jacky> Calum: and ambient temp
[13:05] <Mulreay> <Mulreay> + surface area
[13:05] <@jacky> all I was saying is that you can have too great a rate of flow, and defeat your purpose
[13:06] <@jacky> water goes out hot, and comes back hot... didn't get a chance to cool
[13:06] <@Calum> understood
[13:06] <@jacky> I doubt though... heheeh... that a little pump would be able to do that
[13:06] <@jacky> and, I'm assuming pump is little, as you indicated it could fit in the case
[13:06] <Mulreay> I get what ypur saying but hat is wht we invented heater matrixes
[13:07] <Mulreay> sorry typing with one hand
[13:07] <@jacky> what is a heater matrix?
[13:07] <@jacky> (should I read with one eye?)
[13:07] <@jacky> :)
[13:07] <@Calum> I don't think most normal pumps can pump so fast that the water wouldn't be cooled at all by the rad. It's possible to have flow rate higher than optimal though...as I said, a question of balance
[13:07] <@Calum> heater matrix - heater core
[13:08] <@jacky> heater core... just a mini radiator, for a different purpose... same principle... exchange the heat
[13:08] <@Calum> yep
[13:08] <@jacky> well anyway...
[13:08] <@jacky> what is this beast's other specs?
[13:08] <Mulreay> I broke my left hand and my left foot..
[13:08] <@jacky> you did?
[13:08] <@jacky> !??
[13:08] <@jacky> bad fall?
[13:08] <@Calum> how'd you manage that??
[13:08] <Mulreay> http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071114022131AAyNXzP
[13:09] <Mulreay> for the other question
[13:09] <Mulreay> sorry takes me time to type
[13:10] <Mulreay> I got mugged
[13:10] <@Calum> sheesh...sorry to hear that man, you ok? Dumb question i guess heh
[13:11] <@jacky> wow...
[13:11] <@jacky> get yourself a nice .45 . they are not big, but pack a wallop. Don't let that happen again.
[13:12] <Mulreay> Guys at the cash machine tryed to take my money and I went to press cancel and the guy smashed my knuckles with a bar.. I punched his mate and kicked him in the head and the other guy swund again and broke my toes
[13:13] <@Calum> ouch
[13:13] <@jacky> did they get away? or did you kill the one you kicked in the head?
[13:13] <Mulreay> I wish they got away..
[13:13] <Mulreay> the bank has there pictures though
[13:14] <@jacky> you wish they got away??? why? ... they'll just do it to you, or somebody else again
[13:14] <Mulreay> the bad part was...
[13:14] <@jacky> you should want them caught
[13:15] <Mulreay> they had needles to threaten me... they got my money as they forced me to tell them my pin and one of the needles jabbed me... had tests at the hospital will find out next week... so here's hoping
[13:16] <@jacky> so.. they got away?
[13:16] <Mulreay> yep
[13:16] <@jacky> Yep... get yourself a .45
[13:16] <@jacky> no way I'd put up with that crap
[13:16] <@Calum> wow....sure hope you're ok man....that's terrible
[13:16] <Mulreay> that would be 5yrs minimum here
[13:16] <@jacky> what would?
[13:17] <Mulreay> having a .45
[13:17] <@jacky> just having it? ?? or using it on somebody?
[13:17] <Mulreay> having a gun is illegal
[13:17] <@jacky> here, we have all sorts of screw ball laws... they'd probably want to punish you for defending yourself here, too
[13:17] <@jacky> but... you can't be worried with laws, when right and wrong is the issue
[13:17] <@jacky> you all have absolutely stupid laws then
[13:17] <@jacky> see what you get?
[13:17] <Mulreay> thx Calum by the way
[13:18] <@Calum> stupid laws? Tell us about it, hah
[13:18] <@jacky> jerks with needles, in the street, because they have nothing to fear
[13:18] <@jacky> that's a shame....
[13:18] <Mulreay> the nurse said she thinks I will be fuine but... whoknows
[13:18] <@jacky> Mulreay: I assume you've been to the doctor with it all... ar ethey telling you that your broken bones will heal 100% ?
[13:18] <@Calum> fingers crossed for you mate
[13:19] <@jacky> wishing you the best of luck
[13:19] <Mulreay> jacky: it's just two knuckles with
[13:19] <Mulreay> ....
[13:19] <Mulreay> cracks
[13:19] <@jacky> your foot too, though... right?
[13:19] <Mulreay> and my little toe is the worst
[13:20] <Mulreay> my little toe is displaced
[13:20] <@jacky> was this is some seculded place? nobody around to come help, if you screamed?
[13:21] <Mulreay> not to sound racist but I was in an asian area.. two of them werre walikn across the street and they ignored my cries for help
[13:21] <@Calum> sounds about right....jeez
[13:22] <Mulreay> sorry my one handed typing is harsh
[13:22] <@jacky> could you identify the attackers if you saw them again?
[13:22] <Mulreay> oh we have people on that all ready..
[13:23] <@jacky> huh?
[13:23] <Mulreay> I know somw people.. hence the word is out.. man there in shite if there found
[13:24] <@jacky> is that a yes then?
[13:24] <Mulreay> the one who jabbed me is a blatant smach head and they are well known in areas
[13:25] <@jacky> you knew them??
[13:25] <Mulreay> no but we will find them..
[13:25] <@jacky> well heck... can't the police just go round them up then?
[13:26] <@jacky> and, I'll assume that you can identify them, if you see them again.
[13:26] <Mulreay> wish it worked like that
[13:26] <Mulreay> I want my money back anyway and the best way to do that is to let my mates do it
[13:27] <@jacky> yep... beat it out of them
[13:27] <Mulreay> they got "?400 off me
[13:27] <@jacky> if the cops get them, they just go to jail
[13:27] <@jacky> and you get nothing
[13:27] <@jacky> most likely
[13:27] <Mulreay> that was my rent
[13:27] <@jacky> get your money, first
[13:27] <@jacky> You should sue the government. heh
[13:28] <@jacky> you said they won't let you protect yourself
[13:28] <@jacky> and *they* are not protecting you
[13:28] <@jacky> so.. logically, you should win a suit against them
[13:28] <@jacky> :)
[13:28] <Mulreay> mmm not sure I would turn them in... my mates are very persuasive and can offer them a situation they cannot refuse
[13:28] <@jacky> why not turn them in, after you get your money?
[13:29] <Mulreay> sue'ing is a very American pass time... we don't do it quite as much here
[13:29] <@jacky> you should... maybe you'd get some common sense laws! heheeheh
[13:30] <@jacky> heck.. *we* have a bunch of laws that make no sense... .. sigh....
[13:30] <Mulreay> would be easier to break both there hands and feet... may be a leg or two
[13:30] <@jacky> get your money, first
[13:30] <Mulreay> I won';t see my money again#
[13:31] <@jacky> if you find them, get it the same way they got yours
[13:31] <@jacky> but if you damage them first, you might not get it
[13:31] <Mulreay> <Mulreay> would be easier to break both there hands and feet... may be a leg or two
[13:31] <Mulreay> we'll see
[13:31] <@jacky> you can't pay your rent, with their broken leg
[13:31] <@jacky> know what I mean?
[13:31] <@jacky> heh
[13:32] <Mulreay> true
[13:32] <Mulreay> oh and a semi-black eye fogot about that
[13:33] <@jacky> in a way, you are lucky... it could have been worse
[13:33] <camerongray> oh - I hope you get better soon
[13:33] <camerongray> When did it happen?
[13:34] <Mulreay> fashionably late

[13:34] <Mulreay> yesterday
[13:35] <Mulreay> If you knew some of the people I know.. I would almost feel sorry for them
[13:37] <@jacky> One friend of mine, did something like 15 years.. got out a few years ago.
[13:37] <@jacky> a *very* good friend of mine... did something like 14 years
[13:38] <@jacky> he buried his mother in law....
[13:38] <@jacky> and... these were nice guys
[13:38] <@jacky> amazing....
[13:38] <camerongray> At least the bank have CCTV so they should hopefully catch them
[13:38] <Mulreay> yeah.. one of said friends is a fuzz
[13:39] <@jacky> the first one shot at his wife's lover... hit him a few times... didn't use a big enough pistol... just wounded him.
[13:39] <Mulreay> crazy gun rich america
[13:39] <@jacky> funny system... one actually killed somebody, the other didn't, but tried to - and they both got sentenced to 20 years.
[13:40] <@jacky> what's gun rich got to do with it? heheeh
[13:40] <Mulreay> heh
[13:40] <@jacky> *you* certainly needed one, to equal the odds
[13:40] * camerongray 's list of places not to go if he doesn't want to be killed - Crapo, Manchester, Those Council Estates :P
[13:40] <Mulreay> or to just kee cap them
[13:40] <@jacky> by the way, the frined that wacked his motherin law? .. he used a hammer, not a gun.
[13:41] <Mulreay> wow
[13:41] <@jacky> camerongray: and, I don't use a pistol. Never could hit anything with one.... but let me get my hands on my favorite shotgun. :)
[13:41] <camerongray> lol
[13:41] <Mulreay> Manchester is not nicknamed 'Gunchester' for nothing

[13:44] <@jacky> I don't like big cities

[13:45] <@jacky> I wouldn' tmake it in one of our big cities....
[13:46] <camerongray> hahaha - Edinburgh is good for walking
[13:46] <Mulreay> A parallel trade in illegal narcotics and firearms gave rise to Manchester's nickname of "Gunchester".[3] There were several high profile shootings associated with gangs and drugs in this area during the 1990s and into the 21st century, albeit at a declining rate.[3][4]
[13:46] <camerongray> I just can't be bothered
[13:46] <Mulreay> lol
[13:46] <@Calum> my mate drove through Mosside, got shot at....
[13:46] <@jacky> I bet the rate did decline! after they killed off a few of each other...
